French election underway...

I'm not an expert on the French system, but I understand that if the margin separating the two frontrunners (of the four main contenders) is close enough, then there will be a second round of voting - which will be the decider. The frontrunners are Ségolène Royal of the Socialist Party and Nicolas Sarkozy of the Union for a Popular Movement.

I am hoping that Royal wins. However, despite the pair being neck and neck in the days leading up to the election, many are predicting a Sarkozy victory. We'll see. It is important, of course, that Jean-Marie Le Pen is kept well away from the Elysée Palace.

Le Pen never had a chance, although it's scary how many people support him.

Le Pen is France's answer to Pauline Hanson, while Sarkozy is France's answer to John Howard. Like Howard, Sarkozy has been very successful in stealing Le Pen's racist policies and making them mainstream... I just hope the French people aren't as stupid as Australians in the way they vote.

Just from what I've read during this election and the last one, French voters are quite difficult to read.

Le Pen caused a bit of a stir at the last election when he knocked the Socialists out in the first round and made it through to the second round against incumbent Chirac. Realistically, he wasn't ever going to be voted in, but as you say, the amount of support he does have is a worry.
