There Goes A Tenner

A crazy song needs a crazy video! The start and the finish are particularly interesting. The symbolism for "waiting" is excellent. It's very 1980s, given. But it's infinitely better than any of the recycled bubblegum used for a lot of music videos now.

Great choice. This is one of Kate's most curious songs I think. She sings in sort of a cockney accent! I heard that she wasn't thrilled with the video because it ended up being so rushed. But the premise of the song is, as ever, a wonderful idea.

If you can, track down the TOTP performance of this song from 1982. TOTP clearly didn't know what to do with such an individual as Kate when the charts were filled with two-a-penny pop stars. They had her dancing about chasing after computerised bank notes! LOL

Did you know that it's Del Palmer playing the getaway-car driver in the video?

I wish I knew the meaning of the last section of the song...

    "There's a ten-shilling note,

    Remember them?

That's when we used to vote for him"

Hmmm ... I didn't know that was Del Palmer playing the gettaway driver! you are teaching me new Kate knowledge my dear! Perhaps I should read the Kate biog you mentioned - is it the one with the purple cover?

In terms of the ten shilling note thing, I don't know for certain, but I suspect that perhaps there was the face of a PM or a political candidate on the ten shilling note that the characters used to vote for. I will clarify this with my Kate authority friend, Paul!

Thanks again for posting this vid - in all honesty it's the one I've paid least attention to out of the entire collection, and you've made me revisit it which is never a bad thing!! ;)

Here's the link to Kate performing the song in 1982 on Razzmatazz! I was wrong again I thought it was TOTP! Haha you have to watch this. Blimey. She was SO ahead of her time - we would never see an artist on a kid's show now with such a curious and eccentric performance as this. It's camp, but as is always the case with Kate, you can tell that SO much thought went into trying to interpret the song meaningfully for a TV studio audience - Kate has said that she was worried about perfoming songs on TV because you can't always convey the essence as you can in the music video. Enjoy -

I LOVE it when they chase the money. LOL! ;)
